Personal Statement
I am a South Korean student, currently majoring in Information Interactive Design in Yonsei UIC. I would describe myself as a curious adventurer who is passionate about the world. I was born in South Korea, Seoul in 2002 and went abroad to Paris France when I was five. I lived there for almost 2 years, and moved to Saudi Arabia. I attended a British International school for 4 and a half year in a place called Al-Khobar. I came back to South Korea in 2012, and attended public Korean schools for the rest of my school days.
During my stay at Paris France, I was fortunate enough to spend my early childhood seeing and appreciating art works in famous art museums. At a young age, I felt very much attached to art and was able to foster passion for design and culture. Since then, art was my playground, my sanctuary and my dream. I have loved many different artwork and styles such as impressionism, fauvism and Tim Burton’s unique stop motion animations. I was fascinated in Tim Burton’s animations, almost to the extent of being intoxicated, that I would spend most of my time in middle school creating short videos of stop motion animation with paper. Currently, I am interested in minimalist design and designer Dieter Rams. Before COVID-19, I would often go to the art museum in my free time and take as much time as possible savoring every detail of the artwork in the exhibition. I really liked the process of questioning the intention of the artist, and understanding the story behind the art.
With my multi-national childhood experience I was able to grow up as an open minded person. I love learning new things regardless of expertise and topics. I think that the more I get older, the more astonished I am with the wonders of the world. I watch documentaries with very controversial and intriguing topics in my free time. I like contents that provide me new ideas and change the way I think. To me, thought and ideas are flexible creatures that have to constantly modify to reach maturity. I also enjoy working with other people who are passionate about a project. I appreciate the process of sharing ideas and creating new things with other people. As much as I enjoy the busy passionate city life, serenity is very important to me. I try to make some time to relax, so that I can clear my mind and recharge my energy.
I have interests in diverse and wide expertise, mainly because I do not want to limit myself in only one field. I like integrating and mixing different fields together. It always excites me what new things could be found and created through the convergence.
Throughout my high school days, art, technology and sustainability was always a key word I had in mind. Looking back, I think that in high school I experimented many projects related to those key words, with projects such as “exploring art in the physics of light and wave”. I was always vaguely passionate about “something” but was never quite sure what that “something” was. Now, as a college student with a freer and more flexible environment, I think that “something” was techno-art. To me being able to know that there was even a major named IID in Yonsei was a perfect serendipity. So, I am more than happy and satisfied to be majoring in IID.

What I would like to learn
First of all I would like to learn about how art and technology is integrated, and what incredible synergy it could create. I want to know how those two very different fields could complement each other. Then I would also like to know what kind of technology is being used or developed today, and in what ways I could use it in my future work. I think that it is incredibly important to acquire the skill of organizing, and clearly presenting information in a design. Through this course I hope to acquire such skill in Information Architecture. I am also interested in the various methods/processes of discovering creative projects, so I would like to participate in the Individual Project. As a student who is just starting to learn the various topics in Information Interactive Design, I am more than happy to learn anything that would provide me a better understanding of the techno-art industry, and the math behind the design of everyday objects.

Dreams
Though I don’t have a specific job I would like to have, the one fundamental aspiration I have is to contribute in creating a more sustainable and prosperous world through my talent. In short, make the world a better place. I know that this is a very naïve dream, but I hope to maintain this naiveness throughout my life, so that I can actually do something that can solve social problems and create value that people need. Right now my dream is very vague, and I am still figuring out what I really want and value. I really want to work in a creative work environment where I can meet passionate and positive people, who have the same belief as me in creating something that can actually help and solve people’s problems. Right now, I am learning about what sustainable development is, and trying my best to experience as much as possible. I am trying to find and draw clearer picture of my dream(s). Currently I am interested in design, ICT, business, economy and Sustainable Development.

The Design Fiction of Virtual Worlds
A review of "30 Days in ActiveWorlds" & "Design Fiction as World Building"
In our world, we constantly encounter sci-fi entertainment contents that refer to our reality to an extent that it makes the viewers believe in the fictional world as a reality. Such representation of the imaginary world could be an example of Design Fiction. The article “Design Fiction as World of Building” questions the definition of Design Fiction by investigating two instances of Design Fiction, Game of Drones and The Empathy Engine.
The core research idea of the article is the definition Design Fiction, which has varying explanations. Bruce Sterling, who first coined the term Design Fiction, defined Design Fiction as “the deliberate use of diegetic prototypes to suspend disbelief about change.” Now, the term “diegetic” derives the question of whether Design Fiction must be associated with storytelling and narrative. Diegetic prototype, a key theory of the article, means “prototypes which exist within the unreality of a fictional world.” The article investigates whether fiction should be a term that includes literature and narratives. However, the author debunks the idea that fiction is equal to narrative, thereby separating narrative from the definition of fiction. Another key premise that the article state is that design fiction is composed with a number of artefact building a world together. It is also mentioned that “a Design Fiction is a distinct entity” which we cannot see the shape of it, but can see ‘entry points’ of it.
The article then proceeds with examples of Game of Drones and The Empathy Engine, all of which are cases of Design Fiction. Game of Drones demonstrated a fictional trial called ‘Drone Enforcement System’. The description of the project, such as small details of drones landing on actual charging areas, was incredibly realistic that it convinced the audience that it was a real thing. Also, The Empathy Engine project is another example of the Design Fiction that designed a device that detect human empathy. Although the technology of detecting human empathy is not available in real-life, the highly plausible explanations and manifestation of the device fooled the media in to believing that it was true.
With these two examples of Design Fiction the article derives the conclusion that Design Fiction is “a world building” endeavor as neither of the two projects core was narrative. World Building is defined as “the process of constructing an imaginary realm.” Each of the artefact that composed the Design Fiction was created a coherent set of world, thus illustrating the World Building aspect of Design Fiction.
The concept of Design Fiction and World Building is well demonstrated in a research done by Dr Andrew Hudson-Smith that investigated human action in a Virtual World. The article “30 Days in ActiveWorlds – Community, Design and Terrorism in a Virtual World” is a first person narrative ethnographical research done in a Virtual World called ‘Collaborative Virtual Design Studio (CVDS)’ for 30 days.
Smith created a new virtual world in a software and participated as an avatar named ‘Butch’ and called himself ‘Smithee’. In the Virtual World people could build anything without any restriction, and Smith was aiming to see what people would build if they were capable of building anything. With his efforts to get people’s attention by setting up a competition, the virtual world became very popular. However, there were also incidents of vandalism, where a user destroyed building that others have created, and someone even hacked Smith’s network. Interestingly people confronted Smith as the suspect, and Smith quoted that even though it was a virtual world, he realized that “it was still possible to feel uncomfortable.” In the following days, Smith investigated the feeling of community. He stated that logging in and just being there created the feeling of community and involvement. As Smith’s virtual world was so popular and got many media attention, the world was given another free 30 day extension. However, most of the people left and only some few avatars remained in the world.
One of the key elements that highlight the concept of Design Fiction in Smith’s research is the development and design of what people built and created in the virtual space. Smith stated that the virtual world “can be seen as a huge construction set with a set number of objects” and that “there is the widespread inclination of users to create structures that mirror the real world as much as possible.” This is very similar to Design Fiction, where artefacts of an imaginary setting compose the fictional world. In this sense, the virtual world can be though as the fictional world, and the object in the virtual world as artefacts that constitute in the fictional world. One main thing to note is that the in the Virtual World, people’s artefact will resemble to that of the reality to engage real-life world whether they intended or not. Thus, it seems that as artefacts in the World Building of a Virtual World consists of real-life contexts, the human actions and the outcomes of the Virtual World cannot be completely separated from our real life.

3 Days in “Arcade Empire”

The game I played was “Arcade Empire”, which is a game in the worldwide famous game platform Roblox. Roblox allows users to access a variety of multiplayer online server games where people can meet and socialize within the game world. I chose the game “Arcade Empire” to play with my avatar called “jamieRomie02”.

I first chose a random default boy avatar whose name was “baconn”, and named him “jamieRomie02”. I chose the name Jamie, because that was a name that I would have called myself if I had an English name. I decided to choose my character as a boy to see if I would feel different playing as a different gender. At first, I left my avatar in a default state, but soon I met another person who had the same avatar as me. So, I felt that I wanted to be more unique and changed the style of my avatar. Even though I haven’t intended so, my renewed avatar resembled the famous cartoon character Johnny Bravo, and I felt more confident playing with this new avatar. I think that I acted bolder in this avatar compared to the original default “jamieRomie02” avatar.
The main theme of the game “Arcade Empire” is creating and expanding an arcade building. A small first floor arcade building with just one sofa will be given to the player. The player will have to do quests, buy arcade machines, decorations for their arcade building. The player will have to position arcade machines in their building so that people will come to play the arcade, and the player can earn money. The player can also hire laborers who will clean, fix and collect money from the machines

With the money the player can go to the shop and buy arcade machines, decorations, new building designs and run a slot. There are also fan-made items in the shop, which is extremely expensive. Then there is a round circle on the shop floor, where the player can upgrade their arcade machines if they have 10 machines of that type. So if you have 10 Maze Machines, you can upgrade it to 1 Gold Maze Machine. The player can also expand their arcade building to position more arcade machines and attract more customers. The ranking of the players will be chosen depending on their level, size of the arcade building, the number of visiting customers and the amount of money they have. The ultimate goal of this game is to creatively make your arcade and expand it as much as possible so that it can accommodate more customers.
In the game you actively interact with other players in the server. The game supports many different types of conversation. You can directly chat in the chat box, where all the players in the server can see your chat. Or you can chat privately by designating a player you wish to privately whisper to. You can also mute a player or unmute them as well. Other than chatting, there is a “show action function” where you can press on a certain motion setting and show them your motions. For example, if I click on the “hello” motion, I can wave at people. These are the main two conversation functions that the game provides to the players. Also, other than conversations, the players can friend request other players while playing the game.
My experiences of interacting with other players in the game wasn’t so active than I expected it to be. I think that this is mainly because the game is not a collaborative game. The game’s tasks are mostly individual, where the users will only focus on expanding their own arcade building. For this reason, people were just busy minding their own business, so there wasn’t that much deep interaction other than simple greetings. Despite this environment there were some remarkable moments in communicating with other players.
One factor that was also significant in the interactive environment was the players themselves. If the group of players in a certain time server happen to be group of outgoing people, the conversations are relatively active. For instance, in my first day of “Arcade Empire”, players in that time server chatted very actively in the chat box. People would talk about how much money they earned, and some would comfort those who felt poor for not having much money. I asked one guy how I could upgrade my Maze Machine into gold, and he kindly answered me how to do it via the chatbot.

This is a picture of my first conversation with a player named GabelsWeird11. After the conversation he visited and looked around my arcade building.

In the second day of “Arcade Empire”, people were more quiet and focused on their own tasks. Even though I have tried speaking with 5 players, there wasn’t much conversation going on. The conversations were limited to only short greetings.

However, I was able to find an interesting way people express their excitement in the game, which is something that wouldn’t have happened in the real world. Some players would run around and jump in front of me to show their excitement of meeting a new person. A player named “retire123123” started jumping around when I texted “HI” to her. Also, a player named “hhcave44” started running around me for a considerable amount of time, and I ran around him as well. For this moment, we were like two happy puppies that met each other in a park while going for a walk. While running, I felt a sense of intimacy and surprisingly “hhcave44” friend requested me after the running ceremony.

Also, this player named “NightSlayerXYZ” started hopping on top of slot machines, and running around madly when I greeted him. I also started running round and hopping on top of things for no reason. I didn’t know why, but it felt like I had to.
After the second day, I felt the need to change my avatar. As I encountered someone who had the same avatar as me, I felt disappointed for some reason. Also, the fact that my avatar was a default version made me feel dull and discouraged. I changed my avatar into a more unique and confident looking one. Interestingly, I felt more bold. By this time, I was very well adapted to the environment of “Arcade Empire”, and created a rather amazing arcade building. In the second day, I expanded my second floor of the arcade building, and was earning quite a decent amount of money. I was about in my 12th level in my second day. With this confidence, I ran in and out of shops buying new arcade machines and upgrading it into better machines. Upgrading machines helps to accommodate more customers and collect more money. I had about 12 employees working in my arcade building.
In the third day of “Arcade Empire”, there was only 4 people in the server at that time. An interesting thing was that all 3 of the people were at least in their 60th levels. Nobody spoke a word in the chat box. I could not dare to compete with them, so I just decided to focus on my own arcade business. While I was running in and out of the shopping mall and my arcade, I went around appreciating all the amazing arcade buildings these professional players made. Then I encountered a professional player named “MR_Robinhood127”, who was in his 112th level.

Me running into “MR_Robinhood127” to get his attention.

He was standing in the middle of the road, doing absolutely nothing. I felt the urge to say Hi to him, as I felt a sense of respect and awe to his competence. Sadly, he did not reply to me. I decided to stand in front of him for a while to see if he would react. I clicked on the motion function and waved at him, even dance in front of him. Still, no response. Then I started running around him for a minute and jumped over him as well. He did not react, even till that time. I got kind of disappointed, discouraged and decided to go my way. I was continuing my effort of diligence to expand my arcade building. At that time, I have expanded my 4th floor and had about 200 arcade machines in my building. Then I decided to go for a walk around the game world and have a time out. Then I found a friend request from “MR_Robinhood127”. I was very surprised to see the friend request, since he completely neglected me in the first place. As I was going around the game world, I met “MR_Robinhood127” again in a pond with statues.

Surprisingly, “MR_Robinhood127” started jumping and running around when he saw me. He started hopping on to statues like a mad person. I also started jumping on to statues as well, and we spent a minute of this intense greeting ritual of online intimacy. I think this lasted about 2 or 3 minutes, then “MR_Robinhood127” ran away to do his own business. After lunch in my real life world, I re-logged into the game. At this time, I was in a different server and all the players were different form the previous servers. There were more players in this server. By the time I was done with the game, I became the first ranking player within that time server, and had my name was engraved into the hall of fame. There was even a statue of me in front of the pond.

My arcade building was 4 stories high, and I had 240 arcade machines making millions every second, with a total of more than 12138 customers visiting my arcade building. What a glorious and honorable way to end my 3 day in “Arcade Empire”. I was a true Emperor.

Non-Place Scenario
Roblox “Arcade Empire”
Part 1: The Imaginary visual representation of “Arcade Empire”
Various Arcade Empire game world (time server) are floating in a digital universe. Players are logging in and out of the universes. The universe’s numbers change according to the number of players with in the server.

Part 2: The concept of Non-place
Aspects of Arcade Empire as a non-place
People come and go, it is a platform and there are times where people won’t communicate. When this happens the certain time server universe/world becomes a non-place. (A connection to the Scene 1)
In the beginning Arcade Empire has no history or culture. You are to do what the instructions tell you to do at first. (Showing the various imperative game instructions)
People are individualized. Although there may be variations of avatar, the fact that we have similar avatars hide our individual characteristics and remain anonymous. (Shows groups of players indifferently by passing each other)
The near absence of cognition. When people are requested to do redundant tasks, they let lose of cognition. (Shows bluntly moving player avatar coming in and out of the Shopping Center)
Every time you log in to Arcade Empire, you are always landing in a different time server. Which means, that you will always meet new people whom you may or not interact with. The relationships with the people are temporary.

Actual non-places within Arcade Empire
The buildings and ponds that have no purposes, and are just there for decoration.
Roads that connect the Shopping Center and other Arcade Buildings.
The shopping center where people just come and go, buying arcade machines for simple redundant task that does not really require much thought. People rarely interact with others in this place.
The shopping center that induce people to buy the Arcade Machine with actual real-life money.

Part 3
Aspects that make Arcade Empire a “place”
There are times where people can communicate with each other, although conversations may be shallow. However, these interactions could lead to a much deeper relationship when connected to the real world.
People actually actively engage in cognitive thinking in order to win and obtain goals in the game world. The game context encourages people to actively think of and set strategies for their victory.
Arcade Empire gains history, culture, and meaning once people spend considerable time within the Arcade Empire. Arcade Empire becomes a history as your game records are saved. People make the Arcade Empire space as their home.
Although the time server of Arcade Empire always changes, your Arcade Building remains intact. People can think of their virtual Arcade Building as their “place”. The Arcade Building is where people would place meaning and create their own history, as they design and modify the space.
Landing in a different server each time you log in create abrupt change to environment. People will have to actively engage in getting to know what type of people are in that server and adapt to the new server.

Non-Place Documentary Scenario Narrative
Scene #1
The scene shows Juwon setting up her computer, mouse and searching for Roblox.
POV: This is shown in her point of view.
Scene #2
The scene starts with BGM starting. A video of Juwon staring at the camera is shown with a short introduction text that says “Juwon Cheong (20), Arcade Empire Player.” The voice of Juwon introducing herself, “Hi I am Juwon Cheong and I play by the name JamieRomie 02”
is overlapped with this video.
BGM: “Creeping up on you”
Scene #3
The scene then shows Auge’s quote ““Spaces in which neither identity, nor relations, nor history really make sense. Spaces in which solitude is experienced as an overburdening or emptying of individuality”. Then it moves on to the bird’s eye view of jamieRomie02 in the middle of the pond in the Arcade Empire world. The narration of Juwon explaining her experience is overlapped. She says “When I first entered the arcade empire, I was quite confused. There was no history of me playing the game, I was brand new to the space and the community.”
BGM: “Creeping up on you”
Scene #4
The scene moves on to jamieRomie02 interacting with a player called Basashi in the shopping center. They are having shallow conversations. The Juwon’s narration voice overs saying “In the game there isn’t really much going on, people just come and go and our interactions are shallow. Our conversations barely had any depth other than simple greetings like hi nice hat , cool avatar and stuff like that.”
BGM: “Creeping up on you”
Scene #5
The scene shows the same shopping center where jamieRomie02 is watching three other avatars that all look distinct from each other and mind their own business. Juwon’s narration voice overs saying “it’s possible to customize the avatars, but in the game we remain anonymous. People are individualized and we hide behind our characters not knowing a single real-life identity of that person.”
BGM: “Creeping up on you”
Scene #6
The scene shows jamieRomie02 busily moving back and forth in the shopping center buying arcade machines and upgrading them. His repetitive behavior is shown with speed editing. Juwon narrates “Sometimes with the quests we are to do as we are told, Redundant, Repetitive task would make us lose control of our cognition.” The scene also shows Juwon saying “It just seems like there isn’t much thinking going on in the space.”
BGM: “Creeping up on you”
Scene #7
A black screen appears and music changes. The quote of Auge appears as text, “Places reconstitute themselves in it; relations are restored and resumed in it”. Juwon adds narration in that text, saying “but things can become bizarre at some point.” She pauses for a second and says “Like you can have peculiar interactions with people.”
BGM: “Underwater Exploration”
Scene #8
The scene shows jamieRomie02 and MR_Robinhood127 running around the pond and jumping onto statues. Juwon’s narration voice overs in this video and she says “I had this strange friend named “MR_Robinhood” and we would intensively connect with each other running around statues and places to show intimacy. It really was a fascinating moment for me.” Then the video shows her saying “I think It’s just that we have different ways of communicating in Virtual Reality.”
BGM: “Underwater Exploration”
Scene #9
The scene moves on to jamieRomie02 in front of his statue that honor’s his victory in the game (he even clings on to the statue). Juwon’s narration voice overs, “Also, This virtual reality is a game world, so you have to use your creativity to come up with clever strategies. To win!”
BGM: “Underwater Exploration”
Scene #10
The then shows jamieRomie02’s arcade building. He is proudly standing in front of his building and the perspective is bottom to top view. Juwon’s narrations overlaps saying “And most importantly, the interesting thing about the game space is that you can design your own creative game space, The more you play and spend time in the game world the more you accumulate your own history and meaning to that place. In that case the game space is filled with meaning and creativity.” The scene further show’s the interior of jamieRomie02’s arcade building.
BGM: “Underwater Exploration”
Scene #11
NPC’s coming in and out of jamieRomie02’s arcade building is shown and Juwon’s narration with her various questions overlaps. She narrates “So, my experiences in the game got me thinking about creating history and culture in the VR World.” The scene shows her questioning “ What would happen if people could bond with each other just like we do in the real world?” The overlook of the arcade empire place is shown as a panorama. Again Juwon’s narrations overlaps saying “How can the VR place evolve our interactions?”
BGM: “Underwater Exploration”
Scene#12
Then the scene shows jamieRomie02 in front of the sea. He has no sunglasses on and Juwon questions “How will we represent our identity in Virtual Reality? Will we have VR working spaces in the future?” Then Juwon asks the camera “I mean, Will we then live in two different worlds?” And the video ends with her question.
BGM: “Underwater Exploration”
